Kansas is the 2008 NCAA basketball champions. Trailing by three points as time was running out of the game, Mario Chalmers made a Michael Jordan like three point shot to send the game into overtime.
Both Memphis and Kansas are champion quality basketball teams. Both teams were well coached. Both teams had players with excellent physical fitness and abilities. Both teams had been both mentally and physically fit or they would not have reached the championship game.
In the championship game, I believe Kansas won, because they showed greater mental fitness and toughness.
Both teams were faced with adversity. Memphis was behind at the half and showed great mental fitness and toughness in reclaiming the lead.
Kansas was behind by nine points with 2.12 left in the game. In this situation many teams will lost their momentum, but Kansas did not. Instead Kansas created the momentum they needed by maintaining their confidence, focus and energy. Kansas did not lose their concentration. They played hard. They made the plays at the end of the game.
Memphis was unable to maintain their mental focus and toughness after the score was miraculously tied by Mario's three-point shot. Memphis was unable to maintain their attention and concentration at the end of the game, which was a factor in the game having to go into overtime. Memphis was unable to cope effectively with adversity. Memphis lost their ability to attend, concentrate, maintain focus, energy and toughness during the overtime.
It is very difficult to cope with changes in the momentum, sudden setbacks and disappointments in life. We must realize the need to train ourselves to be mentally fit and tough, so we don't succumb to circumstances that threaten our confidence and prevent success.
Kansas and we need the famous Bo Schembechler's strategy, Sudden Change, to turn adversity adversity into success. What other people lose motivation and momentum, Sudden Change will give you stronger motivation and momentum.
