In football, The Prevent Defense is a defense motivated to not lose.
Consider for a few minutes that The Prevent Defense is more than a defense used by defensive coordinators in football games.
It is a mindset used by people in all relationships and activities, when people are more interested in preserving the status quo rather than pursuing success. The Prevent Defense is consciously and unconsciously utilized in the business world, family life, marriages and parenting.
It is a mindset used by people when they are more interested in staying in their Comfort Zone instead of pursuing greatness.
It is a mindset used by people who are more interested in protecting their territory and opinions rather than making fair, realistic, adaptive, and innovative decisions for actualizing success.
It is a mindset used by people who are more interesting in preserving security instead of actively pursuing new ideas necessary for success.
The Prevent Defense, oftentimes, is a very successful strategy, when used appropriately as a strategy in specific situations.
John from The Leadership Epidemic tagged me to participate in Does Most Leadership Suck-The Challenge. I appreciate the invitation. Here is my my opinion from a mental fitness perspective.
First of all, I do not believe that most leadership sucks. In general, I believe leaders as well as followers make the best decisions they can most of the time.
On the other hand, I believe leaders as well as followers make decisions that suck.
I believe leadership sucks when The Prevent Defense becomes the primary management tool and life management strategy.
Leadership sucks when The Prevent Defense becomes the prevalent mindset for decision-making and managing people.
Leadership sucks when The Prevent Defense is used in situations, where leadership should be providing an attacking, adapting, innovating, generating, encouraging, supporting and validating new offensive strategies for success.
The Prevent Defense leaders suck because The Prevent Defense can prevent success, when The Prevent Defense:
- Destroys momentum generated by past successes,
- Destroys motivation to succeed,
- Destroys individuality, creativity and independence,
- Destroys adaptability and flexibility necessary for ongoing success,
- Destroys the active pursuit of new avenues for success and winning,
- Destroys the development and application of people's unique strengths and skills.
Ironically, The Prevent Defense often becomes The Prevent Success program. The purpose of this post has not to minimize the problems faced by leaders or be overly critical of leaders.
Instead my purpose has been to challenge leaders and each one of us to look at our life strategies. Are we living by The Prevent Defense in our lives? Are we living our lives to avoid losing or are we living our lives to win?
According to The Law of Attraction you will live a life filled with consequences generated by fear and anxiety if you are living your life according to The Prevent Defense.
According to The Law of Attraction you will live a life filled with occasional setbacks, exciting successes, happiness, peace of mind, freedom and control over your life, when you live your life to win.

On June 16th of this year, I had a post that is very relevant to "leadership that sucks". I wrote out of the experience of providing over 4000 psychological reports for Protective Services and the courts. I titled this post, Have I Met You Before, Mr. Nifong?
