I will briefly share with you what has helped me reduce my anxiety about tomorrow.
There was a time in my life, when I was very anxious about tomorrow. After graduating with my Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology, I eagerly look forward to beginning my career in the confines of a child guidance clinic. What I didn't anticipate was the anxiety. How can I help this person? What is the best way to help this person?
There have been many people who have helped me discover how to become free from anxiety about tomorrow.
1. There was my first chief psychologist, who mistakenly, from my perspective, assigned my neighbor to be my next client. Immediately, I told the chief I couldn't see my neighbor as a client and asked that he assign my neighbor to another therapist. My chief did not give into my anxiety. He instructed me to provide services for my neighbor and told me that I would have to learn how to get comfortable providing therapy for people I know.
His message "just do it!" I was taught this years before Nike's commercial.
2. In the child guidance clinic, there was a very small playroom. It was commonplace for two therapist to be engaged in play therapy with their clients in the same room at the same time. One of my associates, told me to forget what I learned in school about being therapeutically distant.
His message "be yourself".
3. I have had a wonderful support system and coach, my wife. I've always had to stretch and grow to reach the level of her confidence in me.
Her message "recognize how good you are and trust yourself".
4. I've had wonderful clients who have taught me ways to think to reduce anxiety and transform anxiety into peace of mind and happiness.
Their collective message has been: "every problem is an opportunity to grow and learn how to take better care of oneself".
5. I remember one of my professors, who I thought was often unprepared. He was very successful in getting me to realize that teachers teach and students learn. Now as a psychologist I evaluate myself on the basis of how well I relate, apply psychological theory and not on the basis of my client's progress or lack of progress.
His message "evaluate yourself on the basis of what you do and not on the basis of what other people do".
6. I have learned strategies to become free from anxiety about tomorrow. These strategies allow me to a say with comfort and peace of mind:
My message "I have confidence in myself".
Here are some of the messages, affirmations, and powerful thoughts I had used to reduce anxiety about tomorrow. Everyone can learn and discover powerful thoughts to reduce anxiety about tomorrow. How have you reduced your anxiety about tomorrow?
