Robyn McMaster from Brain Based Biz wrote a post asking this important question: How Do Doctors Think and How Do You?
"Do you take time to step back and take a good look at the basis for your decisions"?
Robyn also went on to say:
"Jerome Groopman, hematologist at Harvard University took an in-depth look at doctors' decision-making and concentrated on what leads to mistakes. Groopman's findings not only teach us how to approach our doctors with a little more savvy, but also prod us to think deeply about decision-making.
You'd be surprised to know that 80% of medical mistakes are the result of logical fallacies, not being aware of all possibilities and communication with the patient."
What are the four causes of errors?
Groopman, who also was a staff writer for the New Yorker, published his article "How Doctors Think" in the New Yorker.
Doctors make for logical errors, because of:
- Stereotyping,
- Cases Seem Familiar,
- Acting Too Quickly, and
- Emotions.
The purpose of this blog is not to criticize doctors for making errors, but rather to encourage doctors as well as all of us to make better decisions in routine, everyday activities and relationships.
All these errors seemed to me to be errors of adaptation and familiarity. Too often we lose the newness, excitement and genuineness in living life, while living in old, familiar environments. We fail to take time to feel, think about and immerse ourselves in the uniqueness of this moment in the unfolding of our professional careers life or in the aging of our significant relationships.
Stereotypical perceptions and judgments dismiss the newness and nuances of meaning in our lives.
Acting out of familiarity prevents us from listening to ourselves or others.
Acting too quickly prevents us from experiencing life, finding greater intimacy in relationships and solutions to reach our dreams.
Our emotions, although important in life, sometimes can interfere with having an openness to relationships and finding solutions to our problems.
Thank you Robyn and Jerome for refreshing our lives.
