Scott Herrick from Cubicle Rules asked a very intriguing and important question for people who work in cubicles. Scott calls cubicle workers, Cubical Warriors.
People in cubicles never get time off like athletes who have an off-season. People in cubicles work in very small spaces and have very little control over their external environment and assignments.
How do Cubical Warriors find meaning, satisfaction and celebration in their work environment?
When people don't make choices, they become products of their environment. Even when working in a very authoritarian organization, choices are not controlled or do not have to be controlled by the employer or expectations of the milieu.
In my North Star Mental Fitness Program I have The Power Choice, which is a three step process for success and celebrating success. This choice was developed for help people achieve success in difficult situations and feel good about themselves.
I believe that in every situation, people have the right and ability to make choices.
For Cubicle Warrior's and workers in general, it is important to set goals for yourself, when beginning each day and, often, frequently throughout the day. Focus on realistic goals and that you can accomplish within one day. Be flexible, so you can change your goals if necessary.
Your goals may be situational or work oriented. Your goals could be psychological and personal. The content of your goal is not that important as long as you can achieve it. What is important that you daily set your goal or goals. Do not let anyone else deprived you or take away your right to make your own goals.
Often times, your boss or team will give you assignments or you have a job description to fulfill. Having to comply with a job assignment or job description does not take away your opportunity to make a goal for yourself.
Secondly, cubicle workers must act and complete their goals. If you have to change your goal throughout the day, complete what you can on the goals you set.
The third step in the process is to celebrate your success. You do not evaluate yourself on the basis of other's judgments on the amount of work produced. Instead you evaluate yourself on the completion of your goals.
Whenever, you have completed a goal, even if you have not completed a project, learn to celebrate your success. Learn to make a very positive I Am statement such as "I am successful" or "I am successfully taking care of me".
Secondly you celebrate your success by creating your emotional experience by saying I Feel. You have the right to express and feel any emotion you choose following your success.
My blog, Benefits of Success, identified universal benefits of success. Following successful completion of one's goals, it is important to consciously experience these benefits of success. The benefits of success are happiness, peace of mind, freedom and control over your life.
Claiming your successful identity and emotional experience by saying I Am... and I Am Feeling... will give you many opportunities on a daily basis to maintain a good self-concept and develop emotional celebrations and momentum.
Remember, You Live within the Environment Created by Your Choices!
