I Am Afraid to Let Myself Be Happy and Content

"I've been afraid to let myself be happy and content".  Her friend had suggested this to her.  As she thought about it, it seemed right to her.

Although this insight was relatively new for her, her husband had been aware of her fear of being happy for a long time.

She was shocked that her husband knew about her fear.

It was easy for him to figure it out.  For years she had been saying:

"When something good happens, something bad will happen".

How could she feel happy and content?  It was impossible for her to be happy and content when good things happen to her, because she thought something bad was about to take over her life.

It doesn't matter where this thought came from!  What matters was challenging the irrational reasoning embedded in the statement.  Bad things have not always followed good things in her life.

We talked about changing and practicing her new thinking.

She needed to re-condition her mind by saying "when something good happens, I am happy and content.

She needed to re-condition her mind by saying "when something bad happens, I can still be am happy and content.
