"Eat less + exercise more = weight loss". This simplistic plan for losing weight makes sense, but it is wrong, according to Dr. Hyman.
"The Starvation Myth" is: "Eat less + exercise more = weight loss".
Dr. Hyman wrote in his book, Ultra-Metabolism, "calorie restriction almost always backfires". With calorie restriction, the body thinks starvation is occurring, setting off physiological and chemical processes inside us that force us to eat more.
Do you want to know more?
Restricted diets and partial starvation diets don't work because:
1. Eating poor quality food puts the body into a chronic low-grade starvation condition;
2. Slower metabolism;
3. People lose both fat and muscle; and
4. People gain back fat and not muscle.
According to The World Health Organization a starvation diet is a diet with less than 2,100 calories for the average man and 1,800 calories for the average woman.
If you are interested in gaining greater thinness, I highly recommend Dr. Hyman's book for accomplishing this goal. Dr. Hyman realizes the importance of exercise in becoming thin. His recommendation is to eat smart and natural, rather than a partial starvation diet.
I was intrigued with discovering from Dr. Hyman that eating healthy is eating naturally much as our ancestors ate. Once again, making decisions, which recognize our physiological, psychological and ancestral roots, are necessary for permanent changes in the quality of our life.
