Resolutions, affirmations, visualizations, determination, programs and will power often fail. I think I know the answer why. That is why I am a Life and Mental Fitness Coach with a mental fitness program.
I know people fail because their unconscious mind is not receptive to new ideas, new programs, new affirmations or visualizations. It is not enough to try to make the changes in your life by applying any program with a successful track record. If your unconscious mind rejects or deletes the program, you will fail.
At this time of year, many people try to lose weight, so I am going to explain why some very successful weight loss programs don't work for many people. The unconscious mind can prevent any program for self-help and self-development from being successful. I am using weight loss only for an example.
If you consciously wanted to be thinner and have tried conscientiously, but unsuccessfully to become thinner, your failure shows the power of your unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind has programmed you to be overweight. In order to lose weight you must reprogram your unconscious mind. If your unconscious mind is not reprogrammed, the best weight-loss programs will fail you.
Tom Venuto from www.butterfat.com emphasized reprogramming your unconscious mind in his article, The Law of Attraction and Weight-Loss: Can You Think Yourself Thin? which was posted by Valerie.
All of the resolutions, affirmations, visualizations, positive thinking, and weight-loss programs will fail in helping you lose weight permanently, if your unconscious mind remains programed for being overweight. A program for thinness cannot survive in a mind programmed for overeating, eating wrong, failing to exercise and, in short, being obese.
Unfortunately, people try to lose weight and fail, because they violate the laws of the universe.
Gardeners know that you don't plant new flowers without first conditioning the soil. New flowers won't grow in clay and without the proper ingredients in the soil.
People who drive gas driven vehicles know they have to match up the proper fuel for their engines in their vehicle. If you want to power your vehicle with a new source of energy or gas, then you must change the engine. People know better than to put corn-based fuel into their cars without adapting or changing the engines.
There are many examples in the world of computers. New computer programs must be connected and activated in a computer to work. There has to be compatibility and connection between the program and the computer. You must have the same operating system, formating, compatible programming and a means of connection.
Or we could look at wonderful websites and blogs, which would be completely ineffective and useless, without hosting services, blogging technology and search engines.
Let me tell you about my recent experience with computers. Resolutions, affirmations, visualizations, and will power have failed me again. I have purchased two wonderful programs, which will greatly improve the quality of my life. These programs will help me actualize and reach goals I've dreamed about for a long time.
For a month I've been working, affirming, visualizing and using willpower to make these programs work on my computer. These programs are wonderful and I'll be so much happier when I can use them.
I am about to give up. My computer will not accept the programs. Or I don't have the expertise to connect the programs to my computer and integrate the new programs with my old programs.
All of the wonderful discoveries and techniques for behavioral change aren't working for me. As a psychologist, I know how to use relaxation, hypnosis, affirmations, and visualizations to maximize my ability to achieve. Even with willpower, determination and positive thinking none of these techniques are working. The wonderful new programs aren't "sticking" in my computer.
I know the problem isn't my new programs or my lack of effort. The problem is my existing computer. I have to work with my existing computer so my computer will accept the new programs or I will fail. When I make make the choice, I know I can consult with a computer expert to make my computer willing to accept the new programs.
My experience with my computer and my new programs is frustrating the heck out of me much as people get frustrated with themselves and their new weight-loss programs.
Unfortunately, highly determined, motivated and strong-willed people fail with weight-loss programs, because they don't know they need to reprogram their unconscious mind to stop rejecting their efforts and the new program.
If you want to be successful in losing weight, you must reprogram your unconscious mind or consult with a life and mental fitness coach to help reprogram your unconscious mind, in addition to running a weight-loss program. Tomorrow I will blog about how the unconscious mind operates and the necessity for connecting your weight-loss program in a compatible way with your unconscious mind.

Great points Dr Hal! The power of the unconscious in incredible and resilient despite all of our efforts.
Reminds me of our basic biology - how organisms are totally resistant to any chage and doing everything it can to stay in homeostasis.
I think what you are stressing - the reprogramming of the unconscious is critical for any lasting change. I want to think about that as I plan for my intentions for the next year. What is the re-wiring those new intentions will need?
Happy New Year to you.

Dave,
Thank you for your comments about the importance of the unconscious mind. Thank you for pointing out that the unconscious mind is resilient and works on the principle of homeostasis. I look forward to our discussions about the reprogramming of the unconscious mind.
